Mental Magic: Losing Weight With Your Mind

blog-2Let’s face it; a lot of people in America are trying to lose weight.  A lot of those people have been trying to lose weight for a really long time.  If you’re one of these people, there is a change that your mindset is what’s keeping you fat.  It’s nefarious self-sabotage, that’s what it is.  Anxiety, fear, anger, and even sadness can affect our ability to lose weight and live the life we want.  So, what do we do about it?

The first step is to change your attitude toward your body.  Not the body you want, the body you have right now.

1. Recognize how incredible your body is, how well it serves you, how many things you can do with your amazing body.  While you might not be able to climb Everest or be a runway model, your body is working thanklessly for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Your lungs, heart, brainstem, and nervous system work constantly to keep you alive and moving.  Can you imagine doing the same thing 103,680 times a day? Because that’s what your heart does.  Having a loving and grateful attitude toward your body will improve how well it functions.

2. It doesn’t matter what kind of food you eat, your body takes even the worst of it and turns it into fuel so that you can keep doing the things you love.  Your body isn’t trying to sabotage your life by being fat, so do your body a favor and give it fuel it can use well.

3. Your body is designed to take the food you eat and turn it into energy and store the excess for when it is needed.  While there are genetic and hormonal disorders that cause the body to gain weight when it shouldn’t, the chances are your body is working exactly how it should.  Think about that for a second: you are overweight because your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Ok, now let’s talk about your future body.

1. If your goal is to look like your favorite movie star, chances are you will fail.  We all know that each person is unique, and it’s important to realize that the same is true of the bodies we’re in.  Your body is different from anyone else’s.  As you make choices to change your life and lose weight, allow your body to change the way it’s supposed to.  Love the healthy body it’s becoming, even if it isn’t exactly what you were expecting.

2. Think in terms of lifestyle instead of looks.  It’s fine to have goals about fitting into a wedding dress or looking smokin’ in a swim suit.  What’s even more affective is setting goals about what you want to do.  Do you want to run a marathon?  Hike the Grand Canyon?  Learn Latin dancing?  What about have the energy to work all day without drinking a dozen cups of coffee?  How about getting refreshing sleep at night?  As you focus on what you want to do and become rather than what you want to look like a wear, your goals will increase in power.  Your ability to chase them will improve.  Your capacity to change your life will amplify.

Don’t let your mind get in the way of what you want.  Change your attitude, change your body, change your life.
